The historic 13th-century farmhouse estate in the Orcia Valley is located on an expanse of landscaped grounds which offers guests an awe-inspiring vista of gently sloping hills and grain fields. The Orcia Valley and its natural park is known for its clay gullies (called the Crete Senese for their proximity to Siena), and the contrast of these arid gullies and the multicoloured sunflower fields makes a stunning display of natural beauty.
The Val D'Orcia is situated kilometres southwest of Siena and encompasses the medieval hill towns of Pienza, Montepulciano and Montalcino. The villages of Assisi, Orvieto, Pisa, Lucca, Arezzo and Perugia are also easily accessible for daytrips. On the hilltop nearby lies Bagno Vignoni, a suburb of breathtaking scenery that has been built around thermal baths whose soothing powers have been used since the Roman Empire. Le Sorbelle was first given recognition in the 18th-century Ospedale della Scala Book of Records for its sheep farming tradition and also the grains it produced.
The farmers who presided over Le Sorbelle were widely recognized for the wealth of their land even then, enjoying a life of privilege among the townspeople and a reputation for high quality. The buildings of this estate date back to the 13th century. Each of the apartments for rent have been renovated, with great care and respect to the original medieval design, in a rustic style typical of The Val d'Orcia. Each unit can accomodate parties of 2 to 5 persons.
The owner, Manuela, is a member of a large family that has dedicated itself to the local cultivation and production of Tuscan grain for many generations. The spacious swimming pool (20 x 6 sqm) is made entirely of travertine, the typical local stone from the quarries of nearby Bagno Vignoni. It harmoniously fits into the landscape with a superb view of the expanse of grain fields, bringing back to memory the old basins which centuries ago collected the thermal waters in the Roman settlement of Bagno Vignoni.
