Chianti

Chianti, this name evokes one of the most famous wines in the world. Did you know that originally “Chianti” was the basket-bottle wine? Nowadays it has changed its apperance and it’s served in glass bottles, to refine its image. For traditionalists, it’s still possibile to find, in shops, Chianti in a basket-bottle bound in straw (flask). The region became the first wine region in Italy: Grand Duke Cosimo III dè Medici issued a decree in 1716. Later, in 19th century, Barone Bettino Ricasoli of Castello Brolio created the final formula. Chianti grapes were from then on, Sangiovese with Canaiolo, Trebbiano and Malvasia giving this wine a lighter taste than before. Sometimes a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon is included too. There are various zones defined as Chianti: Chianti Classico, Chianti Montalbano, Chianti from Florentine hills, Chianti from Senesi hills, etc. The Chianti Classico is easily spotted due to its “black rooster” on the bottle. In 1984 Chianti was upgraded into DOCG. Now, along with Chianti other important wines, are produced, these are called the “Super Tuscans”. The Chianti region is reached, very easily, from Florence, Siena and Rome, being in the very heart of Tuscany. Visitors roam around old villages (Castellina, Greve) and lose themselves among the enchanting hills covered with vineyards.
