Perugia

Perched on a hill, Perugia is the capital of the Umbria region. The symbol of the city is the griffin and this can be seen on signs and statues all around the city. The birthplace of Raphael's teacher, Perugino, Perugia offers a wealth of art and culture to its visitors. Piazza IV Novembre forms the centre of Perugia which speads outwards along the steep alleys leading to the walls of the original Etruscan settlement and the ancient gates of Porta Marzia, Porta Sole, Porta Cornea, Porta Trasimena, Porta della Mandorla and the Arco Etrusco. The piazza is one of the most beautiful squares in Italy, surrounded as it is by fine buildings and containing the lovely Fontana Maggiore This fountain is one of the finest examples of Gothic art in Italy and shows sculpted marble reliefs representing biblical and mythological individuals, saints, animals and personifications of the months, the sciences, the virtues and places . The fountain was the symbol of the city at the peak of its power and influence. Proud of its historical traditions and the beautiful buildings of the past, Perugia can be admired in thousands of picturesque corners where present and past integrate one another and create an unforgettable atmosphere. Perugia has become famous for chocolate, mostly because of a single firm, Perugina, whose 'Baci' (kisses) chocolates are widely exported. Perugian chocolate is very popular in Italy and the city hosts a chocolate festival every October. Perugia also hosts one of Europe's largest jazz festivals in early July.
